27 October 2023, Hong Kong – The award presentation ceremony of the Special International Invitational of the 6th “Blooming Cup” 5G Application Competition was held in Shanghai last Saturday (21st). The “5G Empowers Macau University of Science and Technology for Innovative Applications of Planetary Magnetic Field Research” project jointly submitted by Companhia de Telecomunicações de Macau, S.A.R.L. (“CTM”), a subsidiary of CITIC Telecom International Holdings Limited (hereinafter referred to as “CITIC Telecom”; stock code: 1883), and Macau University of Science and Technology (M.U.S.T.) won the first prize of Special International Invitational, and the “Best International Application Award” of the 6th “Blooming Cup” 5G Application Competition. This is the second consecutive year that CTM has won the first prize in the competition, once again demonstrating Macau’s innovative 5G application scenarios.

The final of the Special International Invitational of the 6th “Blooming Cup” 5G Application Competition, organized by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People’s Republic of China, was held in Shenzhen from 11 to 12 October. With the theme of “5G Drives Digital and Real Economy Development”, the event attracted participants from 23 countries and regions around the world to submit their 5G application projects from a wide variety of industries and fields.

After fierce competition and rigorous evaluation, nine first prizes, 14 second prizes and 19 third prizes were awarded. Among them, the “5G Empowers Macau University of Science and Technology for Innovative Applications of Planetary Magnetic Field Research” project jointly submitted by CTM and M.U.S.T. won the first prize of Special International Invitational, and the “Best International Application Award” of the 6th “Blooming Cup” 5G Application Competition.

The award presentation ceremony was held in Shanghai on 21 October. Ms. Ebel Cham, Commercial Vice President of CTM, received the award in Shanghai and said that the award once again proves that Macau is at the forefront of 5G applications and innovations in the world. In particular, with the strong support of major shareholder CITIC Telecom International, CTM has invested in the construction of advanced smart cities and 5G infrastructure, and has actively explored the fruitful results of 5G application scenarios with stakeholders in Macau. The application case submitted this year was based on the “5G Smart Campus” Private Network project jointly built by CTM and M.U.S.T. In order to meet the requirements of the “Macau Science 1” satellite project, the “5G Smart Campus” project introduced the innovative smart 5G private network solution. With the establishment of the smart 5G private network, it is possible to avoid many limitations of the current data transmission between ground stations and improve the speed, security and bandwidth of data transmission. As a result, the collection and processing of planetary magnetic field data for the “Macau Science 1” satellite project will be more accurate and efficient, and will provide strong support for the scientific research team of M.U.S.T. In particular, she expressed her sincere gratitude to the university for its trust and support of CTM’s 5G private network, as well as the teams from both sides for their joint efforts to make this innovative 5G application in Macau, which has not only contributed to Macau’s aerospace research, but also brought glory to Macau in the competition.

Dr. Tong Ka Lok, Vice President of M.U.S.T. said that this award not only demonstrates the strength and influence of the university in the field of scientific research and innovation, but also reflects the important role of 5G technology in promoting scientific research. This achievement will provide added impetus to scientific research and innovation in Macau, and help enhance the enclave’s position and influence in the field of global scientific and technological innovation.

Going forward, CTM will continue to explore the potential of 5G and work with various industries in society to create more innovative 5G smart application scenarios, to contribute to the digital transformation and economic development in Macau.
